What To Do in the Days Following Your NJ Arrest

If you have been arrested and charged with a criminal offense in South Jersey, it is important for you to know what to do in the days following your arrest. Whether this is the first time that you have been in trouble with the law, or you have a prior arrest record in New Jersey, the consequences can be confusing and frightening. Hiring the right defense lawyer may be the most important decision you will make. I am John W. Tumelty, and I have practiced criminal law in Atlantic City and across the state of New Jersey for more than 30 years. I am a New Jersey Supreme Court certified criminal trial attorney, and my law firm is devoted to defense in criminal cases, including DUIs, drug charges and other serious offenses.

Do not panic after an arrest. Instead, talk with me as soon as possible about building a rock-solid defense to achieve a dismissal or a not-guilty verdict.

Understand What to Do in the Days Following Your Arrest

After you have been arrested, you need to know that you have rights. Police have to respect those rights and cannot infringe upon them during the search, the arrest and the gathering of evidence. As a former prosecutor, I know what the police can and cannot do during questioning, during any search and seizure and during other parts of the arrest process.

In the days following your arrest, do not talk to your friends and family about the details of your arrest. Don’t post things on Facebook or Twitter, and don’t post articles to a blog relating to your criminal charges. Rely on our firm to protect you and to help you and your family deal with the charges you are facing.
