How a DWI May Affect Your Career

Will I Lose My Job After Being Convicted of DWI?

Many employers require workers applying for specific occupations to hold a driver’s license in good status. If your driver’s license status is seen as a liability, your employment opportunities could be greatly reduced. Some occupations require everyday driving. If you are convicted of DWI, you could be at grave risk of losing your job.

DWI/DUI and your job do not go hand-in-hand. You could even be unable to get another job in the same field if you are currently employed as one of the following workers:

  • Truck driver
  • Taxi driver
  • Limousine or private car driver
  • Bus driver
  • Shuttle driver
  • Firefighter
  • Police officer

Several other occupations require employees to have a driver’s license in good status, including civil service and government employees, and some construction, industrial and utility company jobs. Besides DWI, reckless driving conviction, unpaid traffic tickets, and other moving violations could contribute to the status of your driver’s license.

Protect your livelihood and minimize the effects a DWI conviction could have on your family. Consult with an experienced and aggressive Atlantic County DUI defense lawyer today. Contact me, attorney John W. Tumelty, if you have been charged with DWI in the Atlantic City area or anywhere in South Jersey.

No Provisional/Hardship License in New Jersey

If your driver’s license is suspended or revoked in New Jersey, there is no way to obtain a license that will allow you to drive a motor vehicle on New Jersey roads until you are eligible to get your license back. And, even after that period, you could be required to have an ignition interlock device(IID) installed in your vehicle.

Recent changes to New Jersey DWI law have made it increasingly likely that an ignition interlock device will be installed. If a valid Alcotest or other blood alcohol content (BAC) test results in a BAC of .15 or higher, or if you have been convicted of more than one DWI in New Jersey, you will be required to have an IID installed on any vehicle you drive.
