New Jersey Sex Offender Registry

The Consequences of Registering As A Sex Offender

The penalties for a sex offense are all serious but the possibility of having to register as a sex offender for the rest of your life is a consequence that could forever alter what job opportunities you can receive, where you can choose to live and how you are treated by neighbors and friends who discover your name on the New Jersey sex offender registry.

New Jersey’s sex offender registry law treats convicted sex offenders harshly, and not surprisingly, many of our clients are more worried about appearing on the registry than they are about potential jail time. At my firm, I know that clients have good reason to worry given what they could be faced with after a conviction. I, John W. Tumelty, have both prosecuted and defended people arrested for sex crimes and other offenses in New Jersey for more than 30 years.

Do not panic after an arrest. You have rights and you have options. Learn more about the criminal process by speaking with an experienced criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible.

New Jersey Sex Offender Registry

All convicted sex offenders in New Jersey who are subject to Megan’s Law are required to register for the rest of their lives on the sex offender registry. If the person convicted has only committed one offense, has not committed another offense for 15 years and can prove unlikely to threaten another person’s safety, it may be possible to ask for removal from the registry. Juvenile offenders, who were under age 14 at the time of the offense, may also request removal.

Other offenders, such as those convicted of aggravated sexual assault, may be permanently banned from removal from the registry.
