What to Do If You’re Arrested

If you’re ever accused of a crime, it’s important to do the following: #1: Stay silent. Recognize that it’s your legal right not to answer questions at this time. Police want you to converse and hope you’ll admit the crime. In this scenario, tell the officer you’re invoking the right not to speak and that… Continue Reading

When is Evidence Illegally Obtained?

Several types of evidence fall under the scope of laws pertaining to illegally obtained evidence. Occasionally, evidence that may either greatly harm or help a side in a legal argument is presented. However, the evidence, regardless of relevance, may be inadmissible. That’s because the way in which the evidence was obtained is as important as… Continue Reading

What is a Formal Arraignment?

Juvenile Shoplifting Defense Lawyer Atlantic & Cape May County

Has your young person been charged with juvenile shoplifting? While they are unlikely to face more serious consequences than restitution for a first offense, if they have been caught shoplifting before or the charge is accompanied by more serious charges such as burglary or theft, detention or even the possibility of the charges being heard in adult court become much more likely.

We know that for many parents there may be the temptation to let your child simply experience the full weight of their consequences if they have been charged with juvenile shoplifting. What parents need to remember is that ours is an adversarial justice system. That may mean that your child would face disproportionate or excessive consequences for what may be acting out as opposed to committing an offense with intent.

You need to ensure that your child’s rights are protected at every stage of the process. Having a skilled and experienced attorney there can help secure the best possible resolution to the situation.
