New Jersey is one of the toughest states to get a permit to carry a concealed firearm out in public. Essentially, concealed firearm laws in New Jersey state that only those with a permit are allowed to carry firearms outside of their private quarters or business, but getting the permit is a hassle within itself.

What does someone have to do to get a permit in New Jersey?

In New Jersey, it’s near impossible to obtain a permit to carry a concealed handgun. Normally, the only people that have a permit to carry are retired law enforcement, as they are very picky about the permits they approve. However, if you would like to apply for a permit in the state of New Jersey to carry a concealed weapon, there are three pieces of criteria you must be able to prove.

  1. You have a justifiable need to carry a handgun;
  2. You are familiar with the safe handling and use of handguns;
  3. It is not subject to any of the disabilities set forth under state law to obtain a permit to purchase a handgun or a Firearms Purchaser ID Card.

New Jersey is considered a “may issue” state, meaning that even if you meet this criterion, there is a chance they will not grant you with a permit. However, those who choose to apply for a permit must apply through the NJSP or local law enforcement. Also, if looking to apply, you must be endorsed by three reputable persons – people who have known you for three years and are able to speak well of your good moral character and behavior.

That being said, even those with permits are sometimes wrongly prosecuted, due to the fact that it is such a strict state.
